[OS X Emacs] emacsclient with aquamacs: error opening socket

What are you using for emacsclient?

I use

  /Applications/Aquamacs.app/Contents/MacOS/bin/emacsclient

and it gets along just fine entirely without that socket file.

I have no explicit load for server.el, but C-h f server-start tells me it was loaded from "server.el", which I take to mean the one at 

  /Applications/Aquamacs.app/Contents/Resources/lisp/server.el.gz

I do invoke (server-start) in ~/.Aquamacs/Preferences.el.
