Good question?  (That's what I get for answering an OT post :o)  And, 
the more I think about it: stay far away from 
~/.MacOSX/environment.plist and ~/.launchd.conf since they are poorly 
designed to be version-specific.  Stick with ~/.profile and/or ~/.bashrc 
which are universal and portable to UNIX/Linux as well.
