Fixed. I deleted X11 and upgraded to the latest Xquartz. This broke all
previews - I was now getting the road-block sign. gs was returning an error
due to Free Type 2. I downgraded to 2.4.8 (
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137638). All emacsen work now!

There's no telling anymore what was causing the strange error I was getting
before.

For completeness' sake:

Prof. Reitter: Yes, PNG files were viewable, both in the image-dired and in
image-view-mode.

Pete: Yes, I had tried disabling my init file and loading auctex/preview
from *scratch*.
