AFAIR they're babel shortcuts, quite irregular, could be they're original Knuth *macros*. In TeX. In La*TeX* (since decades?) an update to LaTeX 3 is going on which also tries to convert fragile macros into stable commands and make them regular, algorithmic, computable.

Could be some update of Emacs code is now using LaTeX 3… Could be Google can help…
