Erik, thanks for your answers here, but Pete has been reacting to a new development in the upcoming Aquamacs 3.3.  In-development versions are available at http://aquamacs.org/nightlies.shtml .

The new version contains an “emacs” program that will start up the installed Aquamacs as if it was plain GNU Emacs, on the terminal.  That way, you can have an up-to-date Emacs 25 rather than the one that comes with OSX.

This only works on OS X 10.11.
