[OS X Emacs] Another problem with updating packages. AucTeX

I am in a mess trying to update my very old AucTeX (From M-x List-packages I see auctex 11.88.6 dependency Integrated environment for *TeX*)

If I follow the elpa method, I am offered 11.92 and nothing later. It fails with a not found. I'm guessing it has also been deleted long ago. If I try to delete 11.88.6, it refuses to leave.

If I go to http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/documentation.html and download AucTeX-12.3.zip from there I cannot verify the signature even after hand importing the likely author's key by hand into my gpg keychain. (It is dated 2014 and possibly lacks modern integrity checking).

Then if I ignore the lack of a good signature and unzip, there is no obvious way to brutally tear out the installed version and replace whatever subset is required from the unzipped 12.3 folder.

Has anyone dug themselves out of a similar mess?

Is deleting and re-installing TeX Live and Aquamacs necessary and sufficient?
