I've been talking with William and Gerben off-list about an idea I had.

Why not use Gerben's new installer to kill two font-related birds with
one stone?

1) make the advanced OS X fonts (Hoefler, Zapfino, etc.) available for
use in TeX

and

2) allow for easy installation of other fonts (like the Adobe Type 1
fonts, for which there are packages floating around, but for which even
this is an intimidating installation process for many...like me!)

It seems this is feasible, though Gerben indicated he'd need someone
thoroughly familiar with fonts to write the scripts necessary. Anyone
interested?

My suggestion would be for someone to try to hack and adapt Hoenig's
VFiinstall which is on CTAN. This seems to do everything that one would
want from a font installer---it was written for, and tested on UNIX, but
has not been tested on Mac. Moreover it can incorporate expert fonts so
that one would have a full and genuine alternative to Times and Lucida.

If anyone wants the manual for it I can send it to them.

Create anything that works (script wise), an I'll create an i-Installer
package for it.

write TeX in French with teTeX and my favorite TeXShop, but I don't know
where i must place the French Folder. Is somebody can help me please ?
Thanks, especially to Richard Koch Dirk Olmes Gerben Wierda ... for the
marvellous TeXShop !

Ignoring the qualifier "Macs' normal", then

     a.  Yes,  .pfa  fonts work with  dvips ;
but
     b. No, .pfa fonts do *not* work with pdfTeX .

(Note that it is wrong to speak of teTeX as if it were an application;
it is not. It is a well-ordered collection of related programs and
support files and documentation, etc.)

This is not a problem, as dvips and pdftex are usually configured
to use different .map files, to find the fonts that they need.
Furthermore, both programs are very flexible in the ways that they
can be configured for font usage.
I sent a previous email with some examples of how this can be done.

Moreover, the teTeX collection normally includes font-conversion tools
(e.g. the t1utils ) to convert between .pfa and .pfb , and other
formats as well --- including LWFN, or POST resources, for MacOS.

Is this the simple answer that you wanted?

Cheers,

	Ross

In response to Jerome, I can tell that Bernard Gaulle and me we have
succeeded last week in installing the package French on Mac OS X. I
think Bernard Gaulle has not yet released the new sources. If you are
insterested, contact him at frenchpro at free.fr

hi--

indeed, Prosper is for landscape 'powerpoint-like' presentations. I
never got it to work well under OzTeX, but that was a long time ago in
OS 9.0, with then-current OzTeX.

Uh, the vfinst package _is_ a set of scripts (in PERL, I believe) which
are a wrapper around FONTINST.

That's at once its strength, and a drawback---it can automagically install
any of the fonts in its list, but only those fonts, 'cause it relies on
having specific information about them up front.

I'll see what I can do on this front next week.

I've just made my 5th unsuccessful attempt to download teTeX. The first
4 attempts were downloading the old disk image and the last attempt was
with the new i-installer. So far I have downloaded 25MB, 51MB, 48MB,
17MB & 12MB. Every time I have lost the connection and have to start all
over again. This is driving me crazy.

1. Could you chop the download into smaller portions? No larger than 10
MBs.

or, if that's not possible

2. Can I just buy a CD of this software.

all the best,
Jo.

(Am I the only one having this problem? - my telephone bill can't take
much more of this).
