[OS X TeX] OT: texindex?

Anyone have any experience w/ texindex and *.cp files from a texinfo 
(*.texi) file?

I'm trying to generate a nice version of the UCB Logo usermanual, but the 
index has been a failing point.

I got a processed version (but for a4 page numbers :(

but I can't see the difference between the a4 source which worked 
(usermanual.cp file) and mine which doesn't.

here's what I get from the terminal:

[maxwell:~/Desktop/usermanual] wadams% texindex usermanual.cp
texindex: usermanual.cp: not a texinfo index file
