\text{...} is part of the amsmath package (recommended for serious 
mathematical typesetting). The advantage of \text{...} over \mbox{...} 
is that text takes on the typographic properties of its location:
$P_{\text{tot}}$ will give tot in \scriptsize, with \mbox{...} you'd 
have to write: $P_{\mbox{\scriptsize tot}}$.
