I think the entire NSTextView is getting updated with the coloured log.
It's the case where I first observed ConTeXt being slow on the Mac. With
all those duplicate mapfile warnings:
Warning: pdfetex (file /usr/local/TeX/texmf-local/fonts/map/context/
pl0-ams-cmr.map): entry for `pltt10' already exists, duplicates ignored
...iTM gets progressively slower.
(yeah, yeah, if I just get my mapfiles sorted, things would be nicer)

It does do some sophisticated things, with line numbers becoming hyperlinks.
