[OS X TeX] TeXShop and landscape

I am a "newbie" and experimenting with existing files at home using TeXShop.  However, whenever compiling (is that the correct term for hitting Typeset?) on documents with the 
 
/documentclass[landscape]{slides}
 
command, the resulting pdf file is still showing profile pages but the text is aligned for the landscape format.  (aka a bunch of text is cut off) What am I doing wrong?
