Thanks: that does indeed work but for some reason does not get executed 
in my ~/.emacs.  I read in .emacs, go to the end of the expressions, 
run them with ^x^e, and the font changes.   It even works when I 
substitute 18 for 14 to get 18 pt. monaco.   So then I tried 24 pt. and 
segfaulted.
