Depends on your needs.

If Eddie Kohler's tools sound workable for you, and you're not being 
held to not modifying / converting the fonts, then the OpenType version 
would be okay.

If you're expecting to interact between several different programs at 
once and have the font embedded only once, then Type 1 is the best 
option.
