[OS X TeX] Utopia fonts

Somehow these seem to be broken beyond repair for me.
Are they in some TeX encoding, totally different from what Mac OS X  
expects?
How did they incorporate the font metrics anyway (they seem to work  
without a screen font, this was a requirement in the past). Can I make  
this transformation myself on other .pfb fonts?
