[OS X TeX] showidx term in a footnote.

How about putting the \index command just outside the \footnote? I.e., 
\footnote{Bla bla bla new_term bla bla}\index{new_term} ? this will not 
affect the indexing, as the footnote text will appear on the same page 
as the footnote number, and the new_term will appear in the margin, on 
the same page, although not at the quite right place (but you can 
perhaps warn the readers?).
