[OS X TeX] typesetting time increases greatly with microtype?

I noticed that typesetting times seemed to have increased after turning 
on microtype in a long manuscript I am writing. So, I did a quick test 
and found that the typesetting time for couple of sections are:

without microtype: 16s
with microtype: 25s

Is this to be expected? Do I have something configured incorrectly? I 
am using it via:

\usepackage[protrusion=true,expansion=true]{microtype}

which is equivalent to simply using:

\usepackage{microtype}
