I have for my own personal amusement these directories in
~/Library/texmf/fonts/

drwxr-xr-x 10 pete pete 340 18 Feb 17:01 afm AFM
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 30 Jan 14:23 enc ENCs for fonts
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 30 Jan 14:23 map MAP file fragments
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 10 Feb 00:32 pk not really useful
drwxr-xr-x 18 pete pete 612 3 Mär 16:46 tfm TFM
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 23 Jan 13:35 truetype	well ...
drwxr-xr-x 7 pete pete 238 18 Feb 17:01 type1 PFA&PFB
drwxr-xr-x 15 pete pete 510 18 Feb 17:01 vf VF

Most of these directories have sub-directories to distinguish between
free and other fonts:

Library/texmf/fonts/type1:
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 18 Feb 17:01 adobe
drwxr-xr-x 5 pete pete 170 30 Jan 14:34 bh
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 30 Jan 15:02 bitstream
drwxr-xr-x 3 pete pete 102 30 Jan 14:52 monotype
drwxr-xr-x 5 pete pete 170 10 Feb 01:19 public

To make use of the PostScript or TrueType fonts you need to write map
file fragments like those in these files in
Library/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/updmap:

-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 272 10 Feb 02:56 SIL.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 347 10 Feb 12:00 bcy.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 252 10 Feb 12:01 fas.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 222 10 Feb 21:47 fds.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 674 10 Feb 12:00 mcr.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 2884 5 Mär 17:02 pdfTrueType.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 715 18 Feb 16:59 pgs.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 1112 7 Mär 16:19 slh.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 560 7 Mär 15:56 sls.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 769 7 Mär 15:52 slst.map
-rw-r--r-- 1 pete pete 2342 3 Mär 17:31 ttfonts.map

These map file fragments are put together into the map file via 'sudo
updmap --enable Map=mapfile'. Of some extra usefulness could be sty
files to choose a specific set of fonts. Of course you can put these
files into a similiar structure in texmf.local! But then don't forget
'sudo texhash'!

One thing is important: only pdftex accepts TrueType fonts. But it
seems it has become pretty picky about that ... (Not only because of
that I am working on a scheme to convert TT fonts into PS, to more
easily and more complete install them with fontinst!)
