[OS X TeX] \documentclass undefined

What file format is the .tex file saved as? I get the same problems  
with utf8 files if I save them from TextWrangler or BBEdit, unless i  
use the UTF-8 (no BOM) setting. The BOM seems to be a set of high- 
byte characters inserted at the beginning of the file, they are also  
visible when I open the file with vim.
