Actually it was not a LaTeX question (although what I'm trying to insert 
is a snippet of LaTeX code). It's an alphatk question. I was sleepy and 
sent the post to the wrong list! (I meant to send it to the Alphatk list.)

In Alpha 7  (in OS 9) entering \\ into the macro put a \ into the text 
you are editing. But that doesn't seem to work in Alphatk.
