[OS X TeX] breaking word/word/word

I have the sentence

    In this course we will be dealing with objects sitting on a
    counter/desk/table and we will represent these objects on a
    board/notebook.

and LaTeX will not break counter/desk/table which thus extends into the 
margin. Is there a way to force it to break it?

Alternatively, there is the possibility that LaTeX is hinting that the 
above is not a sentence and that I shouldn't really ask it to typeset 
it. If so, what should I write?
