Xe(La)TeX has problems with them in the presence of babel. Xe(La)TeX is
UTF-8 based, so you don't need to "escape" them as a TeX macro. At
least some issues of this kind were found by users.
GNU Emacs is fine -- it converts those TeX macros into real glyphs, so
you can type fast.
