You may have been thinking of macunpack, which unpacks old stuffit  
files.  I think OpenUp could be modified to use the StuffIt.framework  
to expand .sit files, but you couldn't redistribute it.  It's really  
annoying that StuffIt Expander needs an admin password to install,  
and dumps its framework in /Library/Frameworks; I wish .hqx and .sit  
file types would just vanish completely and obviate the need for it.   
Sorry, I guess that's my OT rant for the day.
