[OS X TeX] Courier font changes?

     Hmm.  I have access to two Macs:

#1: OS X 10.4.2, TeXShop 2.0.3, pdfeTeX Version 3.141592-1.20a-2.2  
(Web2C 7.5.3)
#2: OS X 10.3.9, TeXShop 1.4.0, pdfeTeX Version 3.141592-1.11b-2.1  
(Web2C 7.5.2)

     A LaTeX file created on Mac #1 and viewed on either Mac #1 or  
Mac #2 will have a "wispy" Courier font when viewed in TeXShop,  
Preview, or Acrobat -- on either Mac.  A PDF from the same source  
file, created on Mac #2 and viewed with the same applications on  
either Mac, will appear to have a "darker" Courier font on both  
machines.  Viewing at a higher magnification reveals they are  
different Couriers;  the `@' symbol, for example, is definitely not  
the same.  There is no obvious difference in the other font weights  
(namely Utopia) to my eye.

     According to Acrobat (7.0.2) on Mac #1, the file generated on  
Mac #2 (with TeXShop 1.4.0), has Courier embedded in the PDF, whereas  
the same LaTeX source file compiled on Mac #1 (with TeXShop 2.0.3)  
does not.  And I would guess that "Courier New" instead of "Courier"  
is being displayed by all three PDF viewers mentioned above on Mac #1  
for the PDF created on that Mac.

     The preferences of both TeXShop applications have "Ghostscript"  
selected as the Distiller;  the version of Ghostscript on Mac #1 is  
8.51 while on Mac #2 it is 8.13.  I have no idea why Courier is  
(apparently) embedded on Mac #2 -- nor how to make TeXShop do so on  
Mac #1.  Suggestions would be welcome, step-by-step instructions even  
more so.  Thanks again.
