[OS X TeX] boxing equations

I should have said \fbox{$\displaystyle...$} instead of \fbox{...},  
otherwise \fbox assumes text. Maybe that's the problem?

I haven't used \boxed, though now that I know about it I'll try it.  
I've been using a custom version of \fbox with some struts  to  
increase the size of the box.
