Thanks -- I got it to work by putting the files in my local tree.  For
some reason,
the system location didn't work, even though I ran sudo texhash, and I checked
the ls-R file to make sure that the powerdot files were listed (they
were).  Also,
I had to download the xkeyval package and do a similar install in my local tree
to get powerdot to work.
