[OS X TeX] What is the ``right place'' for map files ?

I am trying to install the improved font metrics for Utopia and
Utopia Expert, by Walter Schmidt.

The last operation is adding the content of a file named putx.map to
general map files.

The installation instructions say :

With "classical" TeX systems such as teTeX, fpTeX, MikTeX or
emTeX/TDS, copy putx.map to the directory
texmf/dvips/config. (NB: The location of font map files
may change in future; consult the documentation of your TeX

In fact, I have tried

and many other locations, as

The result, is always the same :

$ sudo texhash
$ sudo updmap --enable Map putx.map
updmap: This is updmap, version 1122009795
updmap: using transcript file `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/
updmap: initial config file is `/Users/cassini2/Library/texmf/web2c/
updmap: configuration file updated: `/usr/local/teTeX/share/

updmap is creating new map files using the following configuration:

   config file: `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/web2c/updmap.cfg'
   dvips output directory: `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/fonts/
   pdftex output directory: `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/fonts/
   dvipdfm output directory: `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/

   prefer outlines: `true'
   texhash enabled: `false'
   download standard fonts (dvips): `false'
   download standard fonts (pdftex): `true'
   download standard fonts (dvipdfm): `true'

updmap: Scanning for LW35 support files

updmap: Scanning for MixedMap entries:

updmap: Scanning for Map entries:
updmap: using map file `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/map/
updmap: using map file `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/map/
updmap: using map file `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.local/fonts/map/
updmap: using map file `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/map/
updmap: using map file `/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf.tetex/fonts/map/

!!! ERROR! The map file `putx.map' has not been found at all.

Either put this file into the right place or remove the
reference from the configuration file. An automatic way
to disable unavailable map files is to call
       updmap --syncwithtrees

     For manual editing, call
       updmap --edit

So, what is the ``right place'' alluded to by updmap ?

Thanks for any help,

André Bellaïche
