[OS X TeX] XeTeX raw index files (was: Xindy?)

Hello,

While I'm at it -- and since this mailing list has its share of XeTeX users (and
the author :-): What encoding does XeTeX use in raw index files?
I.e., if you have \index{ÄÖÜß}, what ends up in the .idx file?

AFAIK, XeTeX uses UTF-8. Does this mean that the output is plain UTF-8, or is it
some ^^-notation as in Omega?

Thanks in advance for any answer,

	Joachim
