Universal binaries seem more in line with the Mac way of doing  
things: the less you have to know what's under the hood, the better.

Space, of course, may be a concern, as Robert Bruner just pointed  
out. In this specific case, the size of /usr/local/teTeX/bin/i386- 
apple-darwin-current/ seems to be around 30 MB, and similarly for / 
usr/local/teTeX/bin/powerpc-apple-darwin-current/. Relatively  
negligible compared with the ~ 560 MB of the whole TeX install at / 
usr/local/teTeX/ on my setup (which includes CM-Super and additional  
packages and fonts).

That said, it's true that the size of software has tended to inflate  
recently, the most ridiculous example being iWork '06: about 1.1 GB  
for Keynote and 900 MB for Pages, yielding about 2 GB in total. Utter  
nonsense! Because of such clutter, there was only ~ 800 MB free  
yesterday night on the 60 GB hard drive of my PowerBook G4 17" 1 GHz:  
one can live with how slow a 1 GHz processor feels now, but free  
space is absolutely necessary for work!
