Certainly Bruno was talking about the editor and not the previewer
The TEXEDIT environment variable is used by TeX to launch the proper
editor.
AFAIR the default value launches vi, which might frighten many of us ;-)
Of course, on can setup the TEXEDIT environment variable to launch a
previewer but it would be of limited interest,
unless the previewer itself can communicate with the editor...
