[OS X TeX] files in ~/Library/texmf

Well, I thought that it was both, but now, not quite. TeXShop
certainly couldn't find anything, but then switching to the command
line, graphics were found, but bibtex doesn't find my bibliography
file.

TeXShop hadn't crashed, but I quit out of it anyway, and it did, in
fact, fix the problem for TeXShop. Thanks. Since I don't generally
use the command line for this sort of thing, I'm happy enough that it
works from within TeXShop.
So now the question changes a little:
why does bibtex called within TeXShop find my bib file, but bibtex
called from the command line doesn't?
