For free, and for beginner/intermediate level, "The Not So Short  
Introduction to LaTeX2e, to be found here: http://www.ctan.org/tex- 
archive/info/lshort/english/lshort.pdf

Very well-written, and although not nearly as complete as the LaTeX  
Companion, many of average LaTeX users find all they need here.
