[OS X TeX] hypenation of description list - need a hint or two

How about -\\ ?

There are a few environments where hyphenation is switched off. The  
description environment is not meant to contain so much text that it  
spreads over a few lines. You might like to consider something of  
your own, a minipage or some box, that does something like your  
description environment while also supporting hyphenation and  
alignment at both sides/margins ...
