Evidently, the directory does not exist:
sudo ls -l ~/Users/.texlive2007/texmf-var/fonts/tfm
Password:
ls: /Users/derbes/Users/.texlive2007/texmf-var/fonts/tfm: No such file
or directory
So I'm a little mystified.

david-derbess-mac-pro:~ derbes$ chown -R derbes:derbes ~/
Users/.texlive2007/
chown: derbes: Invalid argument
I assume the directory's absence triggers "Invalid argument", but I am
nearly completely ignorant of unix.
Many thanks, David.
