I tried both versions and it does not function. the FAQ here (see
http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/index.php?subject=faq&title=FAQ#faq-compiling) 
  points me to this:

Your $PATH variable does not contain the directory in which the latex  
executable resides. See your system documentation on how to set the  
$PATH variable.


well, can anybody tell me how I can
a) find the location of the latex executable
b) set the $PATH variable

???
