[OS X TeX] tlmgr issues

Sorry if this is noob 101 stupidity, but am i the only person having
problems with tlmgr?

I wanted to update the TL2008, and started with the tlmgr update:

sudo tlmgr update bin-texlive
sudo tlmgr update texlive.infra

went fine on a MBP 10.4.11, but on a Mac Pro 10.5.5, the update
deleted the rungs and tlmgr sym links in /usr/texlive to the scripts
in /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/scripts/texlive/.

On same Mac Pro, running "sudo tlmgr update --all" results in many
errors like this:

update: bin-phyzzx (first remove old, then install new)
remove: bin-phyzzx
remove: bin-phyzzx.universal-darwin
install: bin-phyzzx
Downloading http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/texlive/tlnet/2008/archive/bin-phyzzx.tar.lzma
did not succeed, please retry! at
/usr/local/texlive/2008/tlpkg/TeXLive/TLMedia.pm line 298, <RETFH>
line 114731.

If i repeat the command, it works, only to give a similar error for
another package.  disturbing.
