I have not been able to resolve the issue. Here is what I have done so
far:

1. Under texlive-2007, where my mtpro2 fonts work proeprly, the
command kpsewhich mtpro2.map returns /Users/themis/Library/texmf/fonts/
map/dvips/mtpro2/mtpro2.map.

2. After switching to texlive-2008 (And without running updmap),
kpsewhich returns /Users/themis/Library/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/mtpro2/
mtpro2.map, but the fonts don't work.

3. Running updmap --enable Map mtpro2.map (while on texlive-2008) the
terminal reports:
updmap: This is updmap, version 1211742332
updmap: using transcript file `/Users/themis/.texlive2008/texmf-var/
web2c/updmap.log'
updmap: initial config file is `/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-config/
web2c/updmap.cfg'
updmap: configuration (updmap.cfg) unchanged. Map files will not be
recreated.

The fonts don't work.

3. Running sudo -H updmap-sys (on texlive-2007) I get (in part)

   config file: `/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg'
   dvips output directory: `/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/
map/dvips/updmap'
   pdftex output directory: `/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/
map/pdftex/updmap'
   dvipdfm output directory: `/usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf-var/fonts/
map/dvipdfm/updmap'

The fonts don't work.

4. Switching back to texlive-2007: everything works as it is supposed
to without further updmap.
