An external disk? A disk drive somewhere in the internet? Best would  
be a WORM. Outside MacTeX /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local exists.  
Besides, you can edit /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf  
or /usr/local/texlive/2008/texmf.cnf to include another TeXMF branch.
