You can check the default application by dumping the Launch Services
database:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Laun
chServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -dump

The location might be different on 10.4.  LS is unfortunately flaky when
multiple applications claim the same types.
