[OS X TeX] hyperref links viewed on ipad/ipod

When viewing a pdf file with a link generated by hyperref using the following short tex file, the link is active in pdf viewers and desktop web browsers, but not in Safari on the ipod touch, and I'm told Safari on the ipad has the same issues.

\documentclass[11pt]{article}
\usepackage[pdftex]{hyperref}
\title{Brief Article}
\author{\href{http://math.ucsd.edu}{The Author}}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
\end{document}  

Does anyone know of a reference for these issues, or if there are workarounds?
