[OS X TeX] Locked Files (addendum)

Much like what you initially thought.  I have the pdf (a book which is generated by a master source file with many inputs for source files for different sections) open in TS preview, but the source file for that section has not been opened in TS for some time.
While I now have a Magic Mouse, I am still learning to use it (a pain, I should add),
so I try to use the old one-button method:  I command-click
(yes, that was my misstatement)
on the text, and true, if the source file for that section has already been opened in TS, everything goes correctly.  But if I haven't worked on that section for some time, I get a window whose content is totally blank, and at the top, where the filename goes, I get the filename followed by "-Locked".  I understood from earlier correspondence that the appropriate response is to click on the "-Locked" to get a pulldown menu with choices that includes an unlock option.  If I click on that, I get an error pane saying "This file cannot be unlocked.  You can duplicate and edit the copy."  If I choose unlock, I get a second pane, also devoid of text, and at the top it says <filename>-copy.
If I go to where the source file is located and open it from TS in that location, I get a perfectly workable unlocked file.
So this sounds like a sync problem.

The source files, as well as the pdf, are saved in dropbox.

I assume you mean control-clicking to bring up the contextual menu then choosing "Sync" to bring the source forward?

In any case, I don't see anything like what you talk about, using 3.06 under Lion. I can unlock files in the way you suggest.

If you just start editing the file without unlocking, you should get a sheet telling you the file is locked and giving you the option to unlock it. What happens if you try that?

Is the file on a network volume or such?

Hmmm... If I only open the pdf file and Ctl-Click and then choose Sync (should be the same as Cmd-Click alone I'd guess) nothing happens; i.e., the source doesn't open. If I have both the source and the pdf open and I do that it goes to the correct spot in the Source. Of course this can only happen if the .synctex.gz file is also present. In any case I'm not understanding what the procedure to recreate this problem.
