But if I had written a book using the original fourier package, or if I really liked the tight metrics of Utopia (neither of these conditions is true for me), I would be mightily upset if the original metrics were replaced in the TeX Live distribution. I think Walter Schmidt's solution is the best way forward. 

By the way, Adobe's Kepler font package, a massive update of Utopia, has the same very tight metrics as Utopia---they seem to like them that way.
