Howdy,
Do you really see file.synctex.gz, when you compile file.tex, multiple times? I guess I'm not sure what you mean by ``multiple versions'' here. Do you have your Finder set to hide extensions? A compile produces several files including file.aux, file.synctex.gz, etc., and if you are hiding the extensions you can't tell which is which. Check that Finder->Preferences->Advanced->Show all filename extensions is checked to see all the extensions.
