I actually have been keeping track of typesetting speeds after replacing my 2.3 GHz G5 with a 3 GHz retina Macbook Pro (and seeing a nice 3x typesetting speed improvement). I have found (using a stopwatch and running the program multiple times) that typesetting my ~500 page book (using pdflatex) takes exactly the same time (5 seconds) in Mavericks as in Mountain Lion. In general, I have not seen any other speed-ups in Mavericks (despite claims by others 10.9 is faster).

With your HOME folder active you can open the View Options (View->Show View Options [Cmd-J] in Finder) and there is now a check box to `Show Library Folder'.
