No, apparently it's a Mavericks install glitch that reinstalls the /usr/X11/bin/xstub plus X11.app.

You could somlply change that symbolic link. I still think the easiest way to deal with this is to have Mavericks re-install XQuartz.
Indeed reinstalling XQuartz fixes the problem.
