So the TL part works. But what about the MacTeX-specific part like the prefs pane, ghostscript et al.? The GUI applications are not really a problem since they can be updated independently.

Assuming you have Mavericks, does the installed version of the Preference Pane have and extra button labelled texdistmgr? If so you have the latest version. Otherwise it might be wise to re-install with the released installer.
