[OS X TeX] problems after getting new iMac

Hi all.

Answers to Herb's questions (which seem to have included Dick's and Ettore's):

> What OS are you running?

OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10).  I'm pretty sure that's standard on all newly-purchased Macs.

> Did you try to install FixMacTeX2014.pkg (found in /Applications/TeX)? That will fix up /usr/texbin. Migration Assistant doesn't seem to like symbolic links so strange stuff happens.

Having not done so originally, I have now done so, as well as nuking /usr/local/texlive/2014/bin/x86_64-darwin from my PATH.
It made no difference:

I can't find the format file `pdflatex.fmt'!

BTW, one more data point: I clicked on "TeX Distribution" under "System Preferences" and got the msg "Preferences Error: Could not load TeX Distribution preferences".
