[OS X TeX] "can't use \end in internal vertical mode"

This query replaces a flawed one I sent a few minutes ago.

I am confused by the following error.

I copied the format of the attached tex file from a previous tex file which compiled successfully in the past.
But when I try to compile it, I get the error message in the subject line above.
