[OS X TeX] "can't use \end{document} in vertical mode"

I am confused by the following error.

I copied the format of the attached tex file from a previous tex file which compiled successfully in the past.  But when I try to compile it, I get the error message in the subject line above;  I attach also the log file of the attempt.


What have I overlooked (or miscopied)?
