[OS X TeX] Assigning Skim or TeXShop to open a PDF file

I just tried to use the “Get Info” panel to change the app that opens a particular PDF file from the default Preview to either TeXShop or Skim. When I do this, and double click on the PDF file, I get the error message:
> “BetaT2.pdf” cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.

> macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware.
When the default app for the file is set to Preview, it opens in Preview as expected. But when it’s another app, it appears that the system assumes the PDF file is an app. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? I’m on macOS 10.15.7.
I should mention that if I have the corresponding BetaT2.tex file open in BBEdit, and run a script from BBEdit to open BetaT2.pdf in Skim, it opens properly in Skim with no error messages.
