Manfred:
(Thanks for pointing out the typo)
Your minimal example suggests that the problem is not the quotation marks, since you used my (modified) version directly in your minimal example.

Tamer:
I’ll try the braces instead of quotes, though it looks like that is not the problem.
I used quotes because in the Latex Companion they consistently use quotes for defining the strings even though on a preceding page (e.g., p. 768, near top) they say that curly braces can be used when specifying names. In fact, I have always pretty consistently used braces to delimit fields in bibtex entries.

After writing the responses above (to Manfred and Tamer) I went and changed all the quotation marks (in the definitions of strings) with curly braces, and it took care of my problem. But I still don’t understand why the quotation marks didn’t work for me, even though they worked for Manfred (using the same .bib file).

Oh well, the mysteries of life…;-)

Well, I’m using here a rather old Macbook with TeXShop Version 4.44. I simply type "Acta Mathematica”
with the double quotation mark (above the number 2 on my German keyboard), and it comes out correctly. See the minimal example:

(Just as a side remark: There is a typo in title= … residues des ….)

Hope you find out the right key. By the way, I think that the editors should not be too smart and anticipate what one wants to type. Good luck,

Yes, I set the TeXShop editor to auto complete quotes, so hitting the (double) quote key gives me opening…closing. I’ve frogotten how to turn this off.
I went through and changed the initial quotes by deleting then typing the double quotation sign and erasing the first part. Am I correct that I have now entered the
correct form of quotation mark? If not, how do I get it on my computer?

Here is my full list of abbreviations, with all the quotes changed as indicated above. Is this right or should I do something else to that?
@string{Acta =''Acta Mathematica''}

I think the reason is that you have written ”Acta Mathematica” with opening and closing quotation marks. It should be simply "Acta Mathematica". Maybe your editor converts the quotation marks automatically to opening and closing, which are different.

I’m confused by the following phenomenon:

Following the LaTex Companion, \S 13.2.3 (pp 769ff), I tried to make my references to standard journals uniform by putting, at the beginning of my .bib file, a set of abbreviations in the following format (eg):
@string{Acta =``Acta Mathematica''}

and then use the abbreviation in the following way (eg):
@article{Poincare:residues,
author={Henri Poincar\'e},
title={\foreignlanguage{french}{Sur les residusdes int\'egrales doubles}},
journal=Acta,
volume={9},
year={1886/7},
pages={321-380}
}

I get an error messages in my console:
This is BibTeX, Version 0.99d (TeX Live 2017)
The top-level auxiliary file: Coeur.aux
The style file: plain.bst
Database file #1: calculus.bib
Warning--string name "``acta" is undefined
--line 2 of file calculus.bib
Missing "}" in string command---line 2 of file calculus.bib
 : @string{acta  =``acta
 :                       Mathematica''}
I'm skipping whatever remains of this command

and it seems to quit after a lot of these kinds of errors.

What am I doing wrong? Has the format changed since the Latex Companion was written?
